<h2><strong>What are ‘Green Skills’?</strong></h2>
<p>Green skills are the knowledge and abilities needed to support sustainable practices, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to a low-carbon, eco-friendly economy.</p>
<h3>Why do I need them?</h3>
<p>The Green Skills program at Islington Adult Community Learning is here to help you learn the skills you need for a greener future. Through hands-on classes and certifications, you’ll gain practical knowledge to reduce environmental impact and support eco-friendly practices. Whether you want to improve your skills for a green job or start a sustainable business, this program will help you succeed. In 2025, green skills are more important than ever, and our courses are designed to give you the tools to not only find work in the growing green economy but also make a positive difference in your home, your community and the world.</p>
<h2>What courses are on offer?</h2>
<h4>DIY Energy Saving Workshop</h4>
<p>Our DIY Energy Saving workshop teaches you practical skills to reduce draughts, retain heat, and make your home more energy-efficient. You’ll learn simple, cost-effective techniques for sealing gaps, insulating your home, and improving airflow to limit damp, condensation, and mould. In addition, the workshop explores ways to reduce energy consumption, helping you save money on bills while creating a warmer, healthier living environment. <h4>Exploring Careers in the Green Industries</h4>
<p>The accredited “Exploring Careers in the Green Industries" course helps you discover exciting career opportunities in the growing green economy. Throughout the course, you'll explore key topics like climate change, sustainability, and different green job profiles. You'll also assess your own strengths and interests to see how they align with green careers, whether it's renewable energy, sustainability, or environmental conservation. By the end of the course, you’ll have created a personalised career action plan, giving you the confidence and direction to pursue a fulfilling job in the green industries.</p>
<h4>Cycle Maintenance and Mechanics</h4>
<p>Our accredited Cycle Maintenance and Mechanics course provides hands-on training to help you develop the skills needed to repair and maintain bicycles. You'll learn everything from basic repairs, such as fixing punctures and adjusting brakes, to more advanced techniques like gear systems, wheel building, and suspension servicing. Cycling is a sustainable method of travel, and this course is perfect for anyone looking to support eco-friendly transportation while gaining professional-level knowledge. Whether you're interested in starting a career in cycle mechanics or simply want to maintain your own bike, this course offers the expertise you need. Upon completion, you'll receive an accredited qualification, giving you the confidence to work in the growing cycling industry. You do not need to have your own bike to join this course.</p>
<h4>Introduction to Climate Change</h4>
<p>The "Introduction to Climate Change" course provides a clear and accessible overview of the science behind climate change, its global impacts, and the actions needed to address this urgent issue. You’ll learn about the causes of climate change, such as greenhouse gas emissions, and explore its effects on ecosystems, weather patterns, and communities. The course also covers solutions for mitigating and adapting to climate change, including renewable energy, sustainable practices, and policy efforts. Ideal for anyone wanting to understand the climate crisis and its significance, this course equips you with the knowledge to contribute to a more sustainable future.</p>
<h4>DIY Courses</h4>
<p>The DIY Skills curriculum with a focus on sustainability offers practical, hands-on training in home improvement and repair techniques, with a strong emphasis on eco-friendly practices. You’ll learn skills such as carpentry, plumbing, upcycling, and energy-efficient home improvements, all while using sustainable materials and reducing waste. We also offer women-only DIY classes each term, providing a supportive environment for women to build confidence and practical skills. Additionally, our ‘Men's Shed’ programme provides a community space for men to work on DIY projects, share knowledge, and support each other. Whether you're looking to make your home more sustainable or learn new skills, this curriculum empowers you to create positive change in your life and environment.</p>
<h4>Sustainable sewing</h4>
<p>Our Community Sewing classes with a sustainable theme focus on teaching practical sewing skills while promoting eco-friendly practices. You’ll learn how to repair, upcycle, and transform old clothing into something new, helping to reduce waste and extend the life of your garments. The classes cover basic sewing techniques, as well as more advanced skills like patching, mending, and creating your own sustainable fashion. With an emphasis on using recycled fabrics and sustainable materials, these classes offer a fun, creative way to reduce your environmental impact while building your sewing skills. Whether you're new to sewing or looking to refresh your skills, our community classes provide a supportive space for learning and creativity. We offer both online and face to face classes at various locations across the borough.</p>
<h4>Green Family Learning</h4>
<p>Our Green Family Learning workshops are fun, hands-on sessions for families to explore sustainability together throughout the year. Each workshop covers a different green theme, offering activities for all ages. Enjoy a Supertato Dress-Up Day to celebrate veganism or discover local borrowing and swapping services at the Eco Baby Discover session while learning how to support your baby’s potty skills. Get involved in ‘Drive Carbon Savings’ with interactive games like making a tube map and playing with toy trains. Families can also read stories like Paddington Bear and Clean Up! while creating eco-friendly projects such as making windmills, painting with vegetables, or building with magnetic tiles. These workshops run at various times throughout the year at local libraries, providing a fun, educational way to learn about sustainability and make small changes at home. <h3>How to I enrol on these courses?</h3>

<p><strong>To register online</strong> for one of our courses you will need to <u>sign up</u> for (or <u>sign in</u> if you already have an account). Once you have an account you can then sign in and apply to the course you would like to do. <p>Please note that during the application / enrolment process, you might need to provide the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>A form of identification, such as a driver's licence or passport</li>
<li>Proof of residency in Islington (or London), such as a recent household bill</li>
<li>If you are not a UK national - a document, such as a biometric residency card, to confirm that you have permission to stay in the UK</li>
<li>If you are in paid employment and earning less than £27,007 per gross annum, a payslip or your recent universal credit statement</li>
</ul>
<h3>After registration/ application</h3>
<p>Your details will be reviewed and then you will be contacted by the tutor to discuss the course details with you, which also may include doing an initial assessment. If all is well, you will be then offered a place on the course.</p>
