Working in the Adult Social Care Sector – L1

Who is the course for?

Anyone thinking about a career in adult social care, particularly those with some experience of caring in a voluntary capacity, for example for a family member, neighbour or a friend.

How long is the course?

1 session per week for 10 weeks. The session is usually between 2 ½ and 3 hours.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You are expected to be able to write and communicate at a minimum entry level 3. We can arrange a literacy assessment if you are not sure. No other experience is necessary, though it does help if you have a genuine interest in becoming a carer.

What will the course cover and what should I be able to do by the end of it?

On this course you will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the carer. It explores different types of care need and where caring takes place. The course also examines some important themes around care work, for example ‘personalisation’ and ‘dignity’. We also have care workers and agency managers come in to talk about what is really like to work in care. Many people move on from this course to start a career in care and gain paid employment.

Will I get a qualification?

Yes, this is an accredited course. You will receive a level 1 Open College Network London Region (OCNLR) qualification.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Most of the work will be completed in class. You may be asked to do small pieces of work between classes and these might include doing some research, visiting websites or watching video clips online.

How will my progress be assessed?

As the course progresses, your tutor will assess and mark your written work and support you to make sure you meet the level required. Your tutor will also help you put together a portfolio of evidence which will include all the work you will have done on the course.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Past learners on this course have gone straight into work as carers. Others have built up their care experience through volunteering or progressed to study for a Level 2 adult social care qualification at City & Islington College. Your tutor will discuss your progress with you but also see our brochure for more details

Are there any costs and what do I need to bring?

The course is free and handouts will be provided, but you will find it helpful to bring along your own pen and a note book.

What support is available?

You will receive one to one support from your tutor throughout the course but we will also talk to you about any other support needs you may have.
