15 sessions usually over a period of 15 weeks and will run over 2 terms. Each session is 3 hours long

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You are expected to be able to write and communicate at a minimum entry level 3. You will be asked to complete an initial assessment to check if it is the right course and level for you. If successful you will be expected to find a placement working with children under 5 years old.  You are also required to obtain a DBS (formerly called CRB)

What will the course cover and what should I be able to do by the end of it?

On this course you will cover the following:

  • Providing appropriate play activities for children in a safe environment
  • Healthy eating
  • Working as part of a team
  • Health & Safety, including safeguarding

You will be expected to gain knowledge and understanding of these areas in order to achieve the course requirements. It is hoped that you will also have a boost in confidence and be able to look for work in your chosen field.  Attending our Employment Support sessions can support you with this – see flyer for details

Will I get a qualification? Yes, this is a L1 accredited course. You will receive an NCFE Award

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

You may be given homework activities and have the opportunity to attend our Drop-In sessions if you need support with using a computer – see flyer for details

How will my progress be assessed?

There is no exam, however there will be on-going assessments by your tutor and you will be given a series of activities/worksheets to complete which will contribute towards your portfolio of evidence needed to meet the assessment criteria for the course. The course will also include a variety of teaching methods including group work, discussions and practical activities. Your tutor will explain in more detail once you join the course.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You can progress onto a level 2 Child Care course or another level 1 Vocational and Employment Skills course. Your tutor will discuss your progress with you but also see our brochure for more details

Are there any costs and what do I need to bring?

The course is free and handouts will be provided but you will need to bring along your own pen, note book and a ring binder (folder)

What support is available?

You will receive one to one support from your tutor throughout the course but we will also talk to you about any other support needs you may have
